The role and purpose of distribution

Distribution is a key part in making a film. Films do not just appear in cinemas or on DVD by coincidence, they are placed there by distributors. The trailer to a film is also made by a distributor and without this, people would not know what the film was about and therefore would be less likely to go and view the film. For people to want to go and view the film, an expectation must be built and this can require a large amount of money and time. Independent companies might struggle to finance this.
